Upcoming Meetings/Programs

Tuesday, February 19

Our guild will be participating in the community-quilting projects, noted below.  Following is information about the projects and what you can bring to the meeting.

Sons & Daughters of the United States Middle Passage Quilt
Dr. Evelyn McDowell, Ph.D., President, Sons & Daughters of the United States Middle Passage, addressed our guild at our December meeting.  From Evelyn, "To commemorate the first documented arrival of Africans to British Colonial North America in August 1619, the Sons & Daughters of the United States Middle Passage, a hereditary society for individuals who descend from enslaved Africans and their enslaved/freed descendants, is commissioning a community-quilting project.  This year marks the 400th year since 1619, and consequently we are asking for 400 blocks, containing 4 individual log-cabin blocks.  These blocks will be assembled, connected to backing, and hand-tied.  Blocks are due April 8, 2019. For more information about the quilting project including the pattern and more background information, please see www.sdusmp.org."

Please bring the following to the meeting:    (2) strips of fabric:  1 ½” w x WOF* - either black or dark brown (2) strips of fabric:  1 ½” w x WOF* – either light gray or beige for a total of 4 strips of fabric.  Any fabrics can be used, but it is preferable to choose smaller prints and no stripes.  Camille will provide the red fabrics for the centers of the log cabin blocks, and she will have extra fabrics on hand, as well. *WOF = Width of Fabric Fabric scissors.   Note:  If you will be attending Betsy Smyth’s workshop in the afternoon, and if you plan to stay for the meeting, would you like to leave your sewing machine in the Great Room for use at the guild meeting?  If so, please get in touch with Camille.

Girl Scout Silver Award
We would like to help a Girl Scout who is working on her Silver Award Project.  Silver Award projects are earned by a Girl Scout in 6th through 8th grade by identifying an issue she cares about, developing a project plan, getting it approved by her Council, spending at least 50 hours putting her plan into action.

The project we are supporting is to make “I Spy” quilts with no borders or bindings.  The scout's plan is to make 10 baby-sized quilts (quilt layout 5 x 6 squares) and five lap-sized quilts (quilt layout 6 x 9 squares).  What you can donate:
  • Fabric, suitable to make an “I Spy” quilt.  The fabric pieces need to be a minimum of 8” square.  Yardage or fat quarters would work, too.
  • Fleece for the backing, at least 32" long by 59" wide.  No batting will be used.
If you can help, please bring your donations to this meeting.  Camille and Kara will be collecting them at our Philanthropy table.

Tuesday, March 19
Rachel Derstine from Rachel Derstine Designs will lecture on “My Quilting Journey – Boundaries and Beyond”
